It is another well written, researched history of the Roarks and Conners. ♦ Another remarkable book written by John J. Roark will positively impact your love and knowledge of our heritage. This book is a must read for R-CA members, especially those of William Marion and Virginia Conner Roark lineage. Laura Roark Shropshire was their first born. This amazing, well-documented biography vividly describes her youth, home and community, marriage, farm life, death of her first born and her husband at a young age, and the rearing of five children who became productive, outstanding adults. She endured and struggled through some unbelievable difficulties but triumphed by her faith and determination. As a niece of Laura who lived only a mile from her until the TVA dam scattered the Roark families, I am indeed happy and privileged to own and read this extraordinary book of worthwhile memories for future readers. --- Mildred Roark Buie ♦ What an extraordinary and informative book! John Roark did a masterful job capturing the life and perseverance of Laura Roark Shropshire from her birth in 1878 till her passing in 1968. A good book should arouse the imagination, and this one surely does! As I read, my mind was filled with the many vivid scenes described by John Roark. Each page was like a window to a different piece of her life. As a farm boy reared in the area of old Salem, I am intimately familiar with the many chores of farm life and area locations that were described in the book. My brother and sister also read the book and we have enjoyed many family discussions of people and places illustrated by John Roark. This book offers a priceless opportunity to experience/share/exchange family heritage thoughts with other family members. I hope all of my “cousins” take time to read and enjoy this biography of Laura Roark Shropshire. If you have any lingering questions about your heritage (more than likely), the ancestry chapter will almost certainly provide you with answers. This is both a great reference and a moving story of real life, covering many decades of a proud, fascinating woman who never gave up hope for a better tomorrow for her struggling family. I can’t imagine tackling a project as intricate and exhaustively thorough as this faithful retelling of Laura Roark Shropshire’s life. Thankfully, John Roark could! What a spellbinding book he authored. I urge everyone to purchase and read this treasured book. You will be glad you did! --- Gene Johnson ♦With great anticipation, I looked forward to John Roark’s new book, “Laura Roark Shropshire, Her Life and Works”. With that very same anticipation and excitement I recall, as a young girl, listening intently to Cousin Laura’s life stories when she came to visit with my grandmother, Jennie Witt Blair. So, after publication of the book and certainly not to my surprise, I found I could not put it down. It is an interesting, well written story not to mention the book’s true value regarding family history and genealogy. Both women and men alike will enthusiastically read and enjoy this biography of Laura Roark Shropshire. --- Jenna Mathews Send your check payable to the Roark-Conner Association for $36.00 which includes shipping and handling, to: Carrol Mathews, Treasurer, 7721 Terry Drive, Fort Worth, TX 76180 Please contact Faye Thompson for further information on this and other books offered by Roark-Conner Association 1-972-235-8450. ![]() ![]() Joseph Roark, His Life and Times is a biography of Joseph Roark, 1813-1876.
